What is eloquence ?

According to the Larousse dictionary, eloquence is :

  • "the art, the talent of speaking well, of persuading and convincing by the spoken word; verve" ;

  • "the character of that which, without words, is expressive, significant and convincing".

There are two aspects to eloquence: verbal and non-verbal.

The verbal concerns word choice, sentence construction, speech structure, figures of speech, arguments, examples and so on.

The non-verbal aspect concerns voice, tone, delivery, silences, gestures, facial expressions, gaze, posture, etc.

The two aspects are inseparable and must be harmonised to produce an optimal effect on the audience.

Why is eloquence important?

Eloquence is important because it enables you to :

  • communicate your ideas, values and plans effectively ;

  • make yourself understood and respected

  • inspire confidence and credibility;

  • educate, inform and entertain;

  • move, touch and seduce.

Eloquence is therefore useful in many areas of life: personal, professional, social, political, artistic, etc.

How do you develop your eloquence ?
